Exposition de Voitures Anciennes par l'Automobile Club de Montguyon

A lovely old Simca 8 in the place de la Mairie, Montguyon.

This is an example of a Classic Car post on my sister blog - Rouenleafx.   Click here to see more.

It is rather a long time since my last blog post due to the Covid pandemic that has stopped most events being held in the last eight months.   Thus, it was a great pleasure that a friend of ours told us of a local classic car event on Saturday morning 5th June.  It was held in the lovely Charente Maritime town of Montguyon, a short drive from where we now live in France.

Organised by the local car club - l'Automobile Club de Montguyon, they were able to put on a great little exhibition of cars In the town square, As you can see from the pictures below.

A lovely selection of Renaults, VWs and Simcas as we walked into the exhibition of cars in Montguyon.

The obligatory Citroën 2CV outside of the baker's shop.  Note the two wonderful old bakery delivery bicycles behind the car.

Perhaps, the star of the show was  this Rosalie, a well maintained 1934 Citroën 8CV.

Not all of the cars were French.  This is a Triumph Spitfire with a market stall in the background.

Renault 4CV in French Racing Blue colours and "go-faster stripes".

The distinctive line of a Simca Ami 6 from the swinging sixties.

A fifties Panhard Dyna.

Another British car - Morgan.

Simca 1000.
The bakers van - I assume this is an old Simca.
Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

The more common Volkswagen Beetle.  In France it is called the Coccinelle or Cox for short.

Simca Aronde.

Standard-Triumph, Coventry, England. Produced after Standard-Triumph became part of Leyland, the Triumph Vitesse was a higher performance and sportier version of the Triumph Herald.   It initially had a 1.6 litre engine that was later upgraded to a 2 litre engine.  Both were straight 6 cylinder standard engines.  Introduced in 1962 the model ran until 1971 and was styled by the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti.   The most distinctive feature was the slanted front four headlights. Many body parts were shared with the Herald but the chassis was different.  Both 2 door saloon and 2 door convertible versions of this 4 seater were made.  Although it had sporting looks it was not a particularly fast car.  The 1600cc version had a top speed of under 85 mph and 0-60 mph time of just under18 seconds. The 2 litre version was faster with a top speed of 100mph.  Over 50,000 were built.  They weren't raced often but did compete in Trans Am racing in the early seventies and entered in rallies such as the Monte Carlo Rally in 1963.  Vic Elford rallied a Vitesse early in his career.

March, Bicester, England.  Along with almost every other formula, March made F3 cars from 1969 to 1981.  The March 783 and 793 models spanned the years 1978 and 1979.   In 1978 Ralt produced the dominant car.  For 1979 Chico Sera won the Vandervell British F3 Championship in a March. The 793 differed from the 783 by having some additional ground effect skirts and updated sidepods. Many famous drivers drove these models including Nigel Mansell, Teo Fabi, Tiff Needell, Michele Alboreto, Thierry Boutsen, Andrea de Cesaris, Jean-Louis Schlesser, and Stefan Johansson.  The car pictured was driven by Bret Riley who scored a number of F3 wins.  These cars raced with a number of motors but Bret Riley and Nigel Mansell's used to be powered by a Triumph Dolomite Swindon engine.  Nice to see the car in authentic livery from the time.
