Ferrari, Maranello, Italy.   With the initial 512S proving to have rather disappointing reliabilty and results against the Porsche 917, a modified version was produced in late 1970.  This was the Ferrari 512M, the M standing for Modificata.  The 512M featured a less rounded shape with improved aerodynamics and all had a closed coupé body style.  The 512Ms were converted from the 512Ss.  These modification first appeared at the 1970 Zeltweg 1000kms on a works car driven by Jacky Ickx and Ignazio Giunti, but it did not finish.  In the next race at Kyalami in the 9 hour race, the same car and drivers won but it was not part of the World Championship.  For 1971 the Ferrari works team concentrated on the 3 litre prototype 312PB and dd not enter the 512M except in an Interserie race at Imola that it won..  However, the privateers who owned many of the 512Ms continued the fight.  Importantly one of these privateers was none other than Roger Penske.   He rebuilt the car from bottom up and produced the best 512M that anyone had.  However, even that car did not prove a winner and it only achieved a third at Daytona and sixth place at Sebring.    The yellow car, pictured, is in the colours of Escuderia Montjuich.  That car's greatest achievement was coming an amazing second in the Tour de France.  Other privateers did achieve 3rd and 4th places at the Le Mans 24 hours and a few wins in minor non-championship races.  Thus, a lovely car but not a 917 beater.

Ferrari, Maranello, Italy.  Ferrari built twenty five 512S sports cars to compete with the Porsche 917 in the 5 litre Group 5 class of the 1970 World Championship of Makes.  Ferrari had had to wait for Fiat funds and was behind Porsche in development at the start of the 1970 season. The car was powered by a 5 litre Ferrari V12 engine but was heavier than Porsche's 917.  On its debut at the 1970 Daytona 24 hrs, the lead car driven by Andretti, Merzario and Ickx finished third.  Then at the next race at Sebring the car scored a famous win when Andretti took over the Giunti / Vaccarella car and beat the Steve McQueen Porsche 908.  Unfortunately that was as good as it got.  A second place at Monza and Spa and third places at Monza, Targa Florio, Nurburgring and Watkins Glen rounded the season off.  By the end of the season many had been converted to 512M spec but it wasn't much more successful.  In 1971 a NART 512S took runner-up spot in the Daytona 24 hours.   The Ferrari 512 will go down in history as the car that made the Porsche 917 look so great.   917 drivers such as Rodriguez, Oliver and Bell also drover the 512S on occasion.   John Surtees, making a return to Ferrari for the first time since 1966 also drove them with success and Amon who had left Ferrari for the March GP team also drove them.

Fiat, Turin, Italy.  The best off-track display at the 2016 Le Mans Classic was undoubtedly that of the racing car transporters, including this beautiful Fiat truck used by Scuderia Ferrari.  This Fiat bus chassis was bought by the Scuderia Ferrari in 1957 and transformed by coachbuilder Bertoletti at Forli into their race car transporter which was used until the early sixties.   As well as transporting the cars it gave the mechanics a portable workshop and a place to sleep.  So much more inspiring than the modern versions! The Fiat had a 92hp 6 cylinder diesel engine and it could transport three GP or sports racing cars around Europe to famous tracks such as Spa, Monaco and the Nurburgring.  Must have been amazing to see one of these fully laden on the road.  Unlike the Ferraris it carried it had a very modest top speed of just 85 kph.

Ferrari, Maranello, Italy.  After not competing in 1968 after a change in Sport Car rules, Ferrari produced the Ferrari 312P in accordance with the rules that limited prototypes to 3 litres.  On its debut in 1969 it showed promise as an open sports car by coming second at Sebring.  However this were the year that Porsche introduced the very competitive 908/2 and by the end of the year had the 917 also in winning form.  Thus, no wins were to be had despite it being competitive and coming 4th at Brands Hatch and second again at Spa.   A coupé version was developed for Le Mans but it did not finish even though 2 of them were in the top six during practice.  The coupés were then sold to NART and then ran them for a few more years.  Best placing for NART was 4th in the Daytona 24 hours in 1970.  I have always though that this is one of the most beautiful of the mid-engined Ferrari sports cars and it was driven by the greats such as Chris Amon, Pedro Rodriguez and Mario Andretti as well as other competent sports cars drivers such as David Piper, Peter Schetty and Sam Posey amongst others.

Ferrari,  Maranello, Italy. The 250LM was developed out of the works 250P and retained the name even though most of them should have been called 275LM due to the cylinder capacity (the engine was originally developed for the 3 litre 250 GTO).  It was intended for private racers and Ferrari had intended it to be homologated as a GT car but only produced 30 rather the necessary 100.  Thus in 1964 and 1965 it raced as a prototype.  Under new rules it was homologated as a Group 4 Sports car in 1966.  Many continued racing internationally for many years.  The most famous victory fell to the NART who won Le Mans in 1965 with Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory driving. Amazingly this was the last Ferrari overall victory at Le Mans! The cars had a Ferrari 3.3 litre V12 engine mounted behind the driver and driving the rear wheels.  The chassis was steel and the body was a 2 seater berlinetta style. The one pictured above is Chassis 5907.  I believe this was originally the Maranello Concessionaires UK car with which Graham Hill and Jo Bonnier won the 1964 Reims 12 hours and with which David Piper and Tony Maggs won the Rand 9 hours at Kyalami the same year.  A great endurance racer and won of my favourite Ferraris of all time.  A joy for us all to see Mr Joy!

Ferreri, Maranello, Italy.  This car was introduced in 1951 and followed on from Ferrari's first production car, the 166MM and its evolution into the 195S.  It had a V12 2.6 litre engine and the body of this example was by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan whilst others were by Vignale of Turin.   The Chassis is generally referred to as the 212 Export, as Ferrari was eyeing the American export market.  The sporty coupé body style is known as a Berlinetta.  Although production cars, most of these were destined for racing by privateers.   The car with its 150bhp engine was good for 120mph and a0-60mph time of under 10 seconds.  One was entered in the 1952 Mille Miglia but didn't finish.   A Vignale bodied car won the 1951 Tour de France Automobile.   Another, bodied by Touring came sixth and won its class in the 1951 Tourist Trophy driven by Bobby Baird.

Ferrari, Maranello, Italy.  Lusso means luxury in Italian and thus the 250 GT Lusso is a larger and more luxurious version of the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta.   It was not intended for racing but still some examples competed in the Tour de France (one finished 24th in 1964) and theTarga Florio (another finished 13th in 1964) in private hands.  It had a 0-60mph time of around 8 seconds and a top speed of around 150 mph.   Designed by Pininfarina, it had two seats, a steel Scaglietti body with some aluminium panels, and was powered by the 3 litre V12 engine similar to other 250s. Production was limited to 1963 and 1964.  A really beautiful car of which about 350 were made.

Ferrari, Maranello, Italy.  The 275 GTB was a 2 seater front engined GT car produced by Ferrari from 1964 to 1968.  It had a 3.3 litre V12 engine and was the first Ferrari road car with fully independent suspension all round.   The one in the picture is a long nosed version as the earlier ones had too much front end aerodynamic lift.  Pininfarina designed the body and it was built by Scaglietti.  Some were steel bodied and some were aluminium bodied.  This was perhaps the last in the line of the classic fifties and sixties V12 front engined wire wheeled Ferraris as the Daytona was something else again.  It was a great road car but of course many were raced as well.  Top speed was around 160mph and it had a 0-60mph time of around 6 seconds.  An Ecurie Franchorchamps competition version came third overall in the 1965 Le Mans 24 hours and won its class driven by Mairesse and Beurlys.

Ferrari, Maranello, France.  Dino was a marque that Ferrari set up as an affordable sports car.  They had a yellow Dino badge rather than the famous prancing horse.  Nowadays the Dino 246GT is accepted as a Ferrari by all except the absolute purists.  The Dino was named after Enzo Ferrari's son who died young.  The 246GT was a 2.4 litre 6 cylinder engined mid-engined coupé.  Although the preceding 206GT was the real racing car, the 246GT did appear at a number of big and small events in privateer hands.

Ferrari, Maranello, Italy.  The 308 GTB was 3 litre V8 mid-engined 2 seater sports car produced by Ferrari from 1975 to 1985.  It replaced the Ferrari Dino 246GT.  Top speed was around 160mph and it had a 0-60mph time of under 6.5 seconds.  The GTB had a fixed hard top whilst the GTS had a removable hard top.  Although, not originally designed as a racing car, eventually, some Group 4 versions were built for racing and rallying by Michelotto.  Jean-Claude Andruet won the 1981 Targa Florio Rally in a Ferrari 308 GTB and then went on to win the Tour Auto the same year and the following year.
