Ford, Dearborn, USA.  The first Mustangs appeared in 1964, even if they were referred to as 1965 models and were either 2 door hardtops or convertibles.  Driver train components were from the Ford Galaxy but the car was designed to have universal appeal, including to women, with bucket seats, room for 4 people and a $2,500 price tag.  The basic model had a low power 2.8 litre 6 cylinder engine but the 289 had a 4.7 litre V8 with better performance.  Top speed for the 289 was a little under120 mph and it had a 0-60mph time of a little over 8 seconds.   It was immediately a successful car with huge sales for Ford and the term "Pony Car" was created for it and its imitators.  The Mustang made its public debut as the pace car at the Indy 500 in 1964 and a convertible appeared in the film Goldfinger.  They were immediately raced and rallied worldwide.  In 1964 the Alan Mann entered Mustang 289 won its class and finished eighth overall in the Tour de France Auto driven by Peter Procter and Andrew Cowan.  The Mustang emblem on the front of the car has become a true automotive icon.

Chevrolet, USA.   The Corvair was a car of the sixties and was unusual in that it was quite compact for the time and had a rear mounted engine.   It was available as a hardtop with both 2 or 4 doors and also as a convertible as seen here.  The car was attacked by the consumer activist, Ralph Nader, on safety grounds but the car was probably no more unsafe than any other of the time. The car above is a first generation car that was sold from 1960 to 1964.  The engine variants were all aluminium and under 3 litre.  In my view this was one of the best looking American cars of the sixties.  Some chose to race these cars in the US and they achieved some minor wins.  In the UK, Ian Richardson used one with a Chevy V8 engine in Super Saloons with some success.

Ferrari,  Maranello, Italy. The 250LM was developed out of the works 250P and retained the name even though most of them should have been called 275LM due to the cylinder capacity (the engine was originally developed for the 3 litre 250 GTO).  It was intended for private racers and Ferrari had intended it to be homologated as a GT car but only produced 30 rather the necessary 100.  Thus in 1964 and 1965 it raced as a prototype.  Under new rules it was homologated as a Group 4 Sports car in 1966.  Many continued racing internationally for many years.  The most famous victory fell to the NART who won Le Mans in 1965 with Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory driving. Amazingly this was the last Ferrari overall victory at Le Mans! The cars had a Ferrari 3.3 litre V12 engine mounted behind the driver and driving the rear wheels.  The chassis was steel and the body was a 2 seater berlinetta style. The one pictured above is Chassis 5907.  I believe this was originally the Maranello Concessionaires UK car with which Graham Hill and Jo Bonnier won the 1964 Reims 12 hours and with which David Piper and Tony Maggs won the Rand 9 hours at Kyalami the same year.  A great endurance racer and won of my favourite Ferraris of all time.  A joy for us all to see Mr Joy!

Shelby American, Venice, California, USA.  The Daytona Coupe was built as a specific project based on the AC Cobra to defeat the Ferrari 250 GTO in GT racing.  Only six were built in period but were very successful winning their class in ten major races during 1964 and 1965 and becoming World Manufacturers Champions for GT cars in 1965. Famous drivers included Phil Hill, Chris Amon, Jo Schlesser, Innes Ireland, Jochen Neerpasch, Bob Bondurant, Maurice Trintignant, Jack Sears, Dick Thompson, John Whitmore and Peter Sutcliffe.  Since the sixties many replicas have been made.  The original cars were powered by big 4.7 litre and 7.0 litre Ford V8 engines.  It was named the Daytona as the 1964 2000km Endurance race at Daytona was its first event.

Volvo, Gothenburg, Sweden.  The PV544 was an evolution of the PV444 and was produced from 1958 to 1966. It was a two door small economical four seater saloon.  The PV544 had a successful rallying career.  Perhaps, the most famous was the Singh brothers' victory in the 1965 Safari Rally.  However, Gunnar Andersson and Gunnar Trana had already won numerous other rallies before this including the Rally of Sweden,  the Acropolis Rally, the RAC rally and the 1,000 lakes Rally.  Both won the European Rally Championship in a Volvo.  The car was also used with some success in circuit racing.

Porsche, Stuttgart, Germany. The Porsche 904 GTS or Carrera GTS was a sports racing car produced in 1964 and 1965 to compete in the GT class at major endurance events.  It had a 2 litre flat 4 Porsche engine. The car featured Porsche's first ever plastic body. The top speed was 160mph and it had a 0-60mph time of around 6 seconds.  In its first season it took overall victory in the Targa Florio and class wins in many other endurance events including Le Mans.  It also won many The Alpine and Tulip rallys and took a class win in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally

Rover, Solihull, England.  The Rover 2000 was the very first European Car of the Year in 1964.  It had a new Rover 4 cylinder 2 litre engine and was a leap ahead from previous Rovers.  The series was built from 1963 to 1976.  It was intended as an executive saloon with more appeal to younger drivers than previous Rover models.  The SC had a single carburettor and the TC had twin carburettors.  Roger Clark co-driven by Jim Porter in a Rover 2000  finished sixth in 1965 Monte Carlo Rally and won the Group 1 class, a great driver in the difficult conditions that year. They also finished tenth in the Alpine Rally.

Heron Europa

Heron Europa, Montlhery 2015

Heron, Greenwich, England.  A small British manufacturer from 1962 to 1964.  Only 12 of these Europa were built.  They had 1 litre Ford Anglia engines or the larger 1.5 litre Ford engine.  It had a stteel backbone chassis and plywood floorpan with a GRP body.  As a kit car they cost £580 in the early sixties.

Motor Racing Developments Ltd, Surbiton, England.   MRD was the company name that made Brabhams. It was founded by Jack Brabham a former World Champion and designer Ron Tauranac, both Australians. The Brabham BT11 was extensively used by both the works team and privateers during 1964 and 1965.  Its best result was second place in  the 1965 Mexican GP driven by Dan Gurney.
