Ford, Edison, USA.   This was the second version of the Ford Falcon and predates the Mustang by a few months. The Mustang was a sexier package for not much more and thus the Sprint version of the Falcon was not the success it might have been.   Compared to the base model of the Falcon, the Sprint had a 4.3 litre and then in 1965 a 4.7 litre V8, stiffer suspension and a louder exhaust.   Slightly larger and roomier than a Mustang, it is still a compact 2 door four seater with some power.   They were raced in era both in the US and Europe but without any conspicuous success.  They are still raced today in series such as the Dutch Historic GT and Touring car championship.

Wainer, Milan, Italy.  Wainer is the Italian racing car manufacturer founded by Gionfranco Mantovani.   Their first cars were produced for Formula Junior in 1958.  There were a number of rear engined designs they produced for Formula Junior from then until 1963.   Drivers included Corrado Manfredini, Colin Davis and Ernesto Brambilla. The cars scored some wins as they tended to be relatively up to date designs and have the better Cosworth tuned 1,100cc Ford engines. The cars all had space frame chassis.  The body and nose of the 1963 car look very 1961 F1 Ferrari 156 inspired.   The gearbox was from a Fiat 600.  After the Formula Junior era, Wainer went on to produce F3 cars.

Performance was just under 120mph top speed with a 0-60 mph time in about 8 seconds.   Jensen-Healeys raced mainly in the USA where they were successful in winning the SCCA class D Production Car Championship in both 1973 and 1974.   Some continue to race today.

Ford, Aveley Essex, England. The Ford Escort Mk1 was introduced in 1968.  In 1970 Ford introduced the Escort RS1600 with a Cosworth tuned 1,600cc 16 valve twin cam BDA engine.  This gave the Escort a power to weight ratio that enabled it to compete successfully in touring car racing and rallying with its already good handling. The top speed was over 110 mph and the 0-60mph time was under 9 seconds for the road version. Over the years the size of the engine progressed up to 2 litres and thus some cars became known as the RS1800 and RS2000.  Wins on tarmac included Jochen Mass and John Fitzpatrick's win in 1971 in the European Touring Car Championship event at Jarama but many other podiums and class victories were scored.  In rallying they were even more successful.  Roger Clark won the 1972 RAC rally in an RS1600.  Timo Makinen won the RAC Rally in 1973 and 1974 and the 1,000 Lakes in 1973 driving an RS 1600.

All G50s have Ford V6 engines. The G50 Cup has a 3.5 litres engine that produces 300bhp whilst the G50 GT4 has a 3.7 litre engine that develops 370 bhp. Chevron, Bolton, England.  Chevron was founded by Derek Bennet an enthusiastic clubman's racing driver and engineer.  His Chevron sports cars and single seaters soon became successful customer racing cars. The Chevron B19 was a 2 litre fully enclosed sports car built for the 1969 and 1970 seasons.  It raced with various powerplants such as the Cosworth FVA, FVC, BMW 4 cyl, and Mazda rotary engines.  It was a Group 5 car and around 25 were built in 69/70 and many more since.  Brian Redman won the Nurburgring 500kms on the car's debut but it quickly found its match in the Lola T210.  However, Redman won again in 1970 at Paul Ricard, John Burton won at Hameenlina and Vic Elford at the Nurburgring.  A later version of the B16 was a spyder and it won at Spa in the hands of Brian Redman.  This victory gave Chevron the manufacturers title in the European 2 litre Sports Car Championship, just beating Lola.

Lister Cars, Cambridge, England. Lister Cars started in 1954 but became successful from 1957 when they started using Jaguar engines and components for their sports racing cars.  In 1958 Brian Lister produced a single seater for the Race of Two Worlds based on his successful Jaguar engined sports car.  Both the race and the Lister single seater ended up with the nickname Monzapolis.  The Race of Two Worlds was held on the backed circuit at Monza and was a challenge with a mixture of Indianapolis cars, F1 cars, European sports cars and specials.  The Lister, entered by Ecurie Ecosse, was driven into 11th place in Heat 1 and tenth place in Heat 2 by Jack Fairman.  It didn't start Heat 3. Thus not a successful debut.  Following this it was used in sprints and hillclimbs and later Historic events.  In this it became more successful.

A telephoto lens is essential for many motor racing photos but don't forget that compact cameras have powerful telephoto lenses as well.

Top Speed / Vitesse Maximale 266 kph.

Mon astuce pour faire des belles photos
Choisissez une vitesse d'obturation comme 1/250 ème de seconde pour donner une impression de vitesse sur la ligne droite.  Avec l'expérience, vous pouvez réduire la vitesse d'obturation.

Top photo tip
To give an impression of speed on the straight, pan and use a slower shutter speed.  Here I used 1/250th which guarantees a picture whilst blurring the background.  As you get better you can use a slower shutter speed but this requires practice.
