Exposition de Voitures Anciennes par l'Automobile Club de Montguyon

A lovely old Simca 8 in the place de la Mairie, Montguyon.

This is an example of a Classic Car post on my sister blog - Rouenleafx.   Click here to see more.

It is rather a long time since my last blog post due to the Covid pandemic that has stopped most events being held in the last eight months.   Thus, it was a great pleasure that a friend of ours told us of a local classic car event on Saturday morning 5th June.  It was held in the lovely Charente Maritime town of Montguyon, a short drive from where we now live in France.

Organised by the local car club - l'Automobile Club de Montguyon, they were able to put on a great little exhibition of cars In the town square, As you can see from the pictures below.

A lovely selection of Renaults, VWs and Simcas as we walked into the exhibition of cars in Montguyon.

The obligatory Citroën 2CV outside of the baker's shop.  Note the two wonderful old bakery delivery bicycles behind the car.

Perhaps, the star of the show was  this Rosalie, a well maintained 1934 Citroën 8CV.

Not all of the cars were French.  This is a Triumph Spitfire with a market stall in the background.

Renault 4CV in French Racing Blue colours and "go-faster stripes".

The distinctive line of a Simca Ami 6 from the swinging sixties.

A fifties Panhard Dyna.

Another British car - Morgan.

Simca 1000.
The bakers van - I assume this is an old Simca.
Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

The more common Volkswagen Beetle.  In France it is called the Coccinelle or Cox for short.

Simca Aronde.

Secma, Aniche, France.  Secma have been building niche vehicles since 1995.  The F16 is a 2 seater rear wheel drive road going M1 buggy type vehicle.  It is powered by a rear mounted 4 cylinder Renault 1.6 litre engine that powers the car to a top speed of 110 mph and a 0-60mph time of around 6 seconds through a 5 speed gearbox.  Secma stands for Société d'Etude et de Construction de Mechanique Automobile.  Cheaper than its obvious competitors it offers a car with good handling and acceleration at a low price for fun driving on the road or on track days.

Alpine, Dieppe, France.  This was the first car produced by Alpine after the purchase by Renault.  It was an update of the A310. It had either a 2.8 litre Renault V6 engine or a smaller 2.5 litre V6 turbocharged engine. The latter produced 200bhp and powered the car to a top speed of over 150mph and a 0-60mph time of just over 6 seconds.  The car was lightweight with glass fibre and polyester body panels.  The body was quite aerodynamic and was a 2+2 coupé.  The handling was reputedly quite good.

Martini, Magny Cours, France.  Martini was a French constructer who produced mainly single seater cars for F3 and Formula Renault.  The car above is a Formula Renault car from the mid seventies. and has a 1,600cc Renault Gordini engine and a Renault 5 gearbox.  In 1975 Christian Debias won the French Formula Renault championship using a Martini Mk15.  The Mk15 was used in both the French championship and the European championship with slightly different specifications.  Rene Arnoux won the 1975 European Championship in an FRE spec Martini Mk15.   The car for the FRE national series had a 1,600cc Renault Gordini engine and a Renault 5 gearbox.  Both then and now they were also used in French hillclimbs.

Axone Compétition, Bourgogne, France.  The car is the work of Chantal and Jacques Bonnot and their friends in l'Abergement Ste Colombe .   The first Axones were produced around 1972.   I believe two Axone 1600s were built in 1975/1976.  All seem to have been used mainly for French hillclimbing as they are Formula Libre cars. They have tubular chassis with 1.6L Renault Gordini engines and a Hewland gearbox.  Top speed is 220kph.

Apline, Dieppe, France.  This was the first sports racing car developed by Alpine. Designed in 1962 it competed from 1963 to 1965.   It had a 1 litre Renault Gordini T55 engine, chassis designed by Boyer and Bouleau, suspension designed by Len Terry and a plastic berlinette body designed by Marcel Hubert.  In 1963 it won its class at the Nurburgring.  In 1964 it won its class at Le Mans and won the Index of Thermal Efficiency.  A beautiful and successful little car.

Alpine, Dieppe, France.  This Group 6 sports racing car was built by Alpine with a 2.1 litre turbo-charged Renault engine.  The chassis was similar to the previous A442 but had an enlarged Renault V6 engine in a slightly lengthened chassis.  At the Le Mans 24 hours in 1978 it was the fastest car in the field driven by Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Patrick Depailler but retired after 18 hours.  It's pace, however, had also broken the Porsches and thus an earlier A442B was able to take the win.  The cars had over 500bhp and could easily exceed 20 mph on the Mulsanne straight.  This was the car's only major race and thereafter Ranault concentrated on F1.

Alpine, Dieppe, France.   The A210, originally designated the M66, was designed for the Le Mans 24 hours of 1966.  Originally they had 1.3 litre Renault Gordini 4 cylinder engines.  Some of these were upgraded to 1.5 litre engines for the 1967 Le Mans.   They won their class in both years and continued to do so in 1968 and 1969.  Thus a successful car for the marque.  The car was designed for fast circuits and thus had a long tail which also acted as fins.  It was small and aerodynamic and had a maximum speed just over 160mph.

Renault, Boulogne-Billancourt, France.   This Renault, produced from 1908 to 1913, was one of the first mass production cars designed not just for the very wealthy.  It had a two cylinder engine of just over 1 litre and had a three speed gear box.  Relatively easy to drive, its top speed was around 50 kph. It is a 2 seater voiturette with torpedo type body.  Great to see this still going well today.

Marcadier, Lyon, France.  This French kit car maker made a number of Renaut or Simca powered cars that looked like Can-Am cars in the early to mid seventies.  Most had Renault 8 Gordini engines. This one has a 1,598cc Renault R12 engine, unusually a Hewland rather than a Renault gearbox and a non-standard rear wing.  It is mainly raced by Londoner Tony Gomis in English hillclimbs and sprints and who has had the car since 2000.

Marcadier, Lyon, France.  These cars built from 1967 to 1976 are very pretty little French sports cars.  They were made by André Marcedier who was inspired by Colin Chapman of Lotus fame.  He built a series of kit cars including this Barzoi coupé with gullwing doors.  I believe the original car had a 1,300cc Renault R8 engine but of course some have been re-engined over the years.  In 1968 one took a good eighth place in  the GP de Paris at Montlhery in a race won by Johnny-Servoz Gavin in a Matra.

Renault, Dieppe, France.  The R5 Turbo was produced from 1980 to 1986. Over 3,500 street and rally versions were sold of this very fast hot hatchback.  It had a mid-engined 1.4 litre turbocharged engine which drove the rear wheels.  The street version could do 120 mph and 0-60 in about 7 seconds. With a light body it cornered very well as well. On its Rally debut, Jean Ragnotti won the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally.  He also won the 1982 and 1985 Tour de Corse in the R5 Turbo, the latter in a Renault 5 Maxi which had a 1.5L turbo engine.  On the circuits they were used mainly in one-make series with relatively little success elsewhere.

Renault Sport, Les Ulis, France.  This is a special racing car produced for the Renault Eurocup and is just a silhouette of the road car.  It has a badge engineered Nissan 3.5 litre V6 engine, a glass fibre body and a racing tube frame chassis.  As well as the Eurocup they race in a number of other series and the Dubai 24 hours.  Dominique Laure has some success with his in the Coupe de France des Circuits.

Renault, Flins, France.  The Renault R8 was a small rear engine rear wheel drive car produced in the sixties and early seventies.  The more powerful Gordini version was produced from 1964 and the Gordini 1300 from 1966.  It was much used as a rally car and scored a hat trick of wins in the Tour de Corse between 1964 and 1966.  in the late sixties there was a one make series of Renault 8 Gordini races in which drivers like Jean-Pierre Jarier competed.  It had a top speed of about 175kph and a 0-100kph time of 11.5 seconds.  A very popular classic car in France nowadays and deservedly so with its nationalistic blue and white stripe colour scheme and reputation as an affordable sporting saloon car.

Mon astuce pour fairte des belles photos.
La voiture ne doit pas toujours remplir plus de la trame. il est bon d'avoir des plans d'atmosphère ainsi.

Top photo tips.
The car need not always fill most of the frame.  it is good to have atmosphere shots as well.
